On the first day of spring, I thought I’d visit our
Japanese Garden
here in Portland, Oregon USA. There wasn’t much in bloom — only the camilias and the cherry trees. But it was a nice day (in the 50s) and a wind through the evergreens drowned the city noise and made the garden a far off land.

The Japanese Garden is always a treat for the eyes, even in winter. When I’m there I often forget that I’m less than a mile from the city center. If you have a chance, go to the obon ceremony in August (?) when candles are lit and set on small floats in the pond at sunset, in memory of people who have died.
