The next stop was Washington D.C. We took the tour of the Capital
building.
Here is the rotunda and the statue room.
A quick trip to visit the dinosaurs at the Smithsonian.
We chose the dinosaurs because of the special interest from
some members of our family. But then, we had one hour to
"see the Smithsonian". They say it would take 50 years to see
everything therein if you took one minute per item.
The last picture is of
our four year old giving a "snuggle" to a stegosaurus.
It took a while to explain the significance of the Vietnam Memorial.
To the left is our seven year old trying to grasp it's meaning.
The Lincoln Memorial:
To the left is the view from the Lincoln Memorial when we turned around.
The kids saw only one thing -- water.
They immediately ran down and, to the right, is a picture of our
little guys playing in the Reflecting Pool.
Next stop, the Arlington Memorial Cemetery. To the left is all of the Iwa Jima memorial I have on tape -- the four year old was having his turn with the camera at this stop.
The picture on the right is only a small part of the sobering
vistas of stones -- young men and women who lost the chance to
live because of war, because there are those who think might
is right, and because we want to keep what we have.
This is the burial place of John F. Kennedy.
This is the burial place of Robert Kennedy.
We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Modern, TV generation kids found this somber, serious, and methodical
tribute to the dead a too long and boring spectacle. We are loosing
something there.
